Short description
Po has been reunited with Li, the biological father he long believed he would never see again, and travels with him to a hidden panda settlement where he meets a large community of his clumsy, fun-loving relatives. Their time together is cut short when Kai, a villain with supernatural powers, moves across China defeating its kung fu masters one by one. To stop him, Po must train the village's inexperienced pandas as fighters, with help from his friends Tigress, Crane, Monkey, Mantis and Viper, and from his teacher Master Shifu.
The film is directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni, from a screenplay by Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel, and produced by Melissa Cobb. Jack Black returns as Po, joined by Bryan Cranston as Li, Dustin Hoffman as Shifu, Angelina Jolie as Tigress, J.K. Simmons as Kai and Jackie Chan as Monkey. It follows Kung Fu Panda 2 in Yuh Nelson's directing work and precedes Panda Paws and The Darkest Minds; for Carloni it precedes Panda Paws and The Cat in the Hat. The production, a China–United States co-production, is reported to have cost about 145 million USD and to have taken roughly 521 million USD worldwide, a strong return on that outlay.
Audience scores sit in similar territory: on IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from around 216,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9/10 from 6,777 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.9/10 from 179 reviews places professional opinion in line with the general audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- Mads Mikkelsen was supposed to voice Kai, but was unable to due to a busy filming schedule. In the film, this character is voiced by J.K. Simmons.
- In the scene where Po discusses the game with the pandas, the four animals were voiced by Angelina Jolie’s children – sons Pax and Knox, and daughters Shiloh and Zahara (all bearing the Jolie-Pitt surname).
- DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures ceased their collaboration in 2012, so this will be the first film in the series distributed by 20th Century Fox.
- Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson endowed Kai with supernatural abilities. Here's how she later explained her decision: “Tai Lung was a fighter, Lord Shen was intelligent. What could we do with the villain of the third film? Only give him supernatural powers.” “Kai” means “god” in Japanese.
- This is the first full-length American animated film created in collaboration with a Chinese studio. One-third of the film was created in China, while the rest was made at DreamWorks Animation in the USA.
- Po's father was originally intended to be voiced by Jamie Campbell Bower, but Brian Cranston was ultimately cast in the role. It should be noted that neither of them voiced Po’s father at the end of Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011). There, the character is voiced by Fred Tatasciore, who also voices Master Shifu in the franchise’s video games and in the Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (2011) animated series.
- For J.K. Simmons, who voices Kai, this will be the first premiere in 2016. The second will be the full-length animated film "Zootopia".
- The film's premiere was scheduled for December 23, 2015, but was postponed to a later date to avoid competition with the release of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (2015).
