Short description

While Po and his father are visiting a secret panda village, an evil spirit threatens all of China, forcing Po to form a ragtag army to fight back.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the scene where Po discusses the game with the pandas, the four animals were voiced by Angelina Jolie’s children – sons Pax and Knox, and daughters Shiloh and Zahara (all bearing the Jolie-Pitt surname).
  • For J.K. Simmons, who voices Kai, this will be the first premiere in 2016. The second will be the full-length animated film "Zootopia".
  • Mads Mikkelsen was supposed to voice Kai, but was unable to due to a busy filming schedule. In the film, this character is voiced by J.K. Simmons.
  • The film's premiere was scheduled for December 23, 2015, but was postponed to a later date to avoid competition with the release of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (2015).
  • Director Jennifer Yu gave Kai supernatural abilities. She later explained her decision as follows: 'Tai Lung was a fighter, Lord Shen was intellectual. What was to be done with the antagonist of the third film? The only option was to give him supernatural powers.' In Japanese, 'Kai' means 'god'.
  • In the episode where Po discusses playing with pandas, four of the animals are voiced by Angelina Jolie's children—sons Pax and Knox and daughters Shiloh and Zahara (all of whom use the surname Jolie-Pitt).
  • Po's father was originally to be voiced by Jamie Campbell Bower, but Bryan Cranston was eventually cast for the role. It should be noted that neither of them voiced Po's father at the end of 'Kung Fu Panda 2' (2011). In that film, the character is voiced by Fred Tatasciore, who also voiced Master Shifu in the franchise's video games and the animated series 'Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness' (2011).
  • Director Jennifer Yuh Nelson endowed Kai with supernatural abilities. Here's how she later explained her decision: “Tai Lung was a fighter, Lord Shen was intelligent. What could we do with the villain of the third film? Only give him supernatural powers.” “Kai” means “god” in Japanese.

  • DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures ceased their collaboration in 2012, so this will be the first film in the series distributed by 20th Century Fox.
  • This is the first full-length American animated film created in collaboration with a Chinese studio. One-third of the film was created in China, while the rest was made at DreamWorks Animation in the USA.
