Right On! is a performance film shot on the rooftops of lower Manhattan, in which the original lineup of the Last Poets performs material drawn from their 1969 Concept-East Poetry appearance at the Paperback Theater in New York. Across its 78 minutes the group delivers a set of numbers that blends poetry, ritual, street theater and soul music into a single staged event. The film presents the performers as themselves, with Gylan Kain, Felipe Luciano and David Nelson appearing as members of the Original Last Poets, joined by musicians including Carlos Cuebas on congas and drummer Gene Ballard.
Herbert Danska directed and produced the film, which was made by Concept East N.Y. and released in the United States in October 1970. It belongs to the early part of Danska's filmmaking career, arriving shortly after the stage performance it adapts. Running just over an hour, it sits between documentary, history and music, capturing a specific moment in Black poetry and performance culture rather than telling a conventional story.
Audience response has been modest in scale but positive: on IMDb it holds a rating of 7.8 from 44 votes, suggesting a small, appreciative viewership rather than a wide one.
