Isadora
Short description
Isadora is a biographical drama about the American dancer Isadora Duncan, who reshaped ideas about ballet in the early twentieth century. The film follows her career across Europe and the United States and her unorthodox views on free love, dress and lifestyle, which shocked the public of her day. Her personal life, including her marriage to the Russian poet Sergei Yesenin, and her later years on the Riviera, where she works on her memoirs, form part of the story.
Karel Reisz directed, working from a screenplay by Melvyn Bragg and Clive Exton, with Robert and Raymond Hakim producing. It was Reisz's second feature, arriving between Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) and The Gambler (1974). Vanessa Redgrave plays Duncan, with James Fox, Jason Robards, John Fraser and Zvonimir Črnko among the cast.
Released in September 1968 and running 131 minutes, the film holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 2,800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from a much smaller number of votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the filming of the dance scene in the theater, with unsuspecting extras playing the audience, Vanessa Redgrave did what Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) once did herself. She ripped off the top of her dress and danced topless. The extras were caught off guard, and this achieved the reaction of a completely shocked audience, which is what director Karel Reisz (1926-2002) wanted to capture.
