Flophouse America is a documentary that explores the American housing crisis through the experiences of those living in cheap, dilapidated hotels. The story focuses on Mikal, a bright twelve-year-old boy who has spent his entire life in a hotel room. While he dreams of a more stable existence and hopes his mother will overcome her struggle with alcohol, the addictions of his parents make such stability difficult to achieve. The film examines themes of resilience and hope amidst the difficult realities of living on the margins of society.
The film was directed and written by Monica Strømdahl. It is a co-production between the United States, Norway, the Netherlands, and the Netherlands Antilles, involving production companies such as ARTE, RBB, Fri Film, and Basalt Film. Beathe Hofseth and Siri Natvik served as producers for the project. Released on June 19, 2025, the documentary has a runtime of 78 minutes.
