Nicole and Chase are neighbors who could hardly be more different. She is a popular, fashion-conscious student focused on her school's big centennial dance, while he is a rebellious outsider who resents the school's traditions and rules. After Nicole's hoped-for date takes someone else and Chase's girlfriend breaks up with him, the two strike a deal: they will pretend to be a couple to make their former partners jealous. As preparations for the celebration bring them together, their arrangement stops feeling like a performance.
The film was directed by John Schultz, the second of the eight features listed in his filmography, following The Making of 'Jurassic Park' and preceding Like Mike. Rob Thomas wrote the screenplay, and Amy Robinson and Jonathan McHugh produced. Melissa Joan Hart plays Nicole, Adrian Grenier plays Chase, and the cast also includes Susan May Pratt, Kris Park, Ali Larter and Mark Webber.
Released in the United States in October 1999, the film runs 91 minutes. Made for a budget of 8 million dollars, it took in 23 million dollars worldwide, a solid return on its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 449 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 38 reviews sits below that audience score, indicating that moviegoers responded more warmly to the film than reviewers did.
