The Virgin Suicides

The Lisbon family lives in a quiet suburban neighbourhood in the mid-1970s, and their five teenage daughters draw the attention of the local boys. After thirteen-year-old Cecilia takes her own life, the sisters become the focus of the whole community. Their strict, religious parents respond by withdrawing further from the outside world, restricting the girls' contact with others and eventually keeping them inside the house. The story is told from the perspective of the neighbourhood boys, who remain fascinated by the sisters and try to understand what is happening to them.

Sofia Coppola wrote and directed the film, her second feature after Bed, Bath and Beyond (1996) and the one preceding Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006) and later titles including Priscilla (2023). Kirsten Dunst plays Lux Lisbon, with Josh Hartnett as Trip Fontaine and Michael Paré as the adult Trip Fontaine; James Woods and Kathleen Turner appear as the parents, and A.J. Cook is among the credited cast of 69. Francis Ford Coppola, Dan Halsted and Chris Hanley produced.

Made for about 6 million dollars, the film took roughly 10 million worldwide. It holds a 7.2 rating on IMDb from around 185,000 votes and a 7.1 on TMDB from far fewer, while the critics' score of 7.4 from 106 reviews sits slightly above both audience figures.
