Short description

The Pentagon Wars is a 1998 HBO comedy-drama based on a memoir by retired US Air Force Colonel James G. Burton. It follows Colonel Burton, played by Cary Elwes, who is assigned to evaluate the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, an infantry carrier that has consumed seventeen years of development and billions of dollars. What he finds is a programme riddled with falsified records and rigged tests, and his efforts to report the truth put him at odds with General Partridge, played by Kelsey Grammer, who wants the vehicle approved and in production. Burton faces pressure, procedural obstruction and threats to his career as he pushes for honest trials of the machine. The film is Richard Benjamin's eleventh, arriving between Mrs. Winterbourne and Marci X.

The cast includes Viola Davis as Sergeant Fanning, John C. McGinley as Colonel J.D. Bock, Tom Wright as Major William Sayers and Clifton Powell as Sergeant Benjamin Dalton, with twenty-one credited performers in all. It runs 104 minutes and was produced by Howard Meltzer for HBO, blending comedy with the bureaucratic conflict at the centre of the story.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.1 from around 6,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.9 from a much smaller base of 88 votes. The two scores agree closely, suggesting a generally positive reception from those who have seen this television production.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The vehicle was named 'Bradley' only after the death of General Omar Bradley in 1981.
  • The Israeli army did not acquire the Bradley. Until the release of this film, the Bradley IFV was only in the arsenal of the Saudi Arabian army outside the US. A number of these vehicles were recently delivered to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
  • The film quite rightly shows that too much time was spent on the creation of the Bradley IFV. The film is included in the training program for the US Air Force command.
