Dan Bartlett is a high school student whose plans for a Caribbean holiday with his wealthy girlfriend Lori and her family fall apart when he misses their flight. Rather than give up, he sets off on his own to catch up with them, and the journey turns into a string of mishaps and encounters with smugglers, a boat captain and a fugitive, among others. The trip becomes far more eventful than the vacation he intended.
Steven Lisberger directed the film, which followed Tron (1982) and came before Slipstream (1989) in his filmography. Steven W. Carabatsos wrote the screenplay, and Theodore R. Parvin and Pierre David produced it for Paramount and RKO Pictures. John Cusack plays Dan, with Wendy Gazelle as Lori and Monte Markham and Shelley Fabares as her parents. Robert Loggia, Jerry Stiller and the rest of the supporting cast fill out the characters Dan runs into along the way.
Released in May 1987, the comedy runs 93 minutes and was made for about 4 million dollars, a figure it matched at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from roughly 4,400 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from about 100 votes, indicating a modest audience response. A critics' rating of 4.5 from five reviews sits below both audience scores.
