Short description
Rudy is based on the life of Daniel E. "Rudy" Ruettiger, a young man from a steel mill town who dreams of playing football for the University of Notre Dame. Those around him—his father, teachers, coaches and friends—doubt he can be admitted to the university or join its celebrated football program, and his modest grades, limited athletic ability and small stature work against him. Rather than give up, he persists in pursuit of a place on the team, determined to prove the doubters wrong.
David Anspaugh directed the film, working from a screenplay by Angelo Pizzo and producing with Cary Woods and Robert N. Fried. It followed Anspaugh's Hoosiers and Fresh Horses, and preceded Swing Vote in his filmography. Sean Astin plays Rudy, with Jon Favreau, Ned Beatty, Lili Taylor, Charles S. Dutton and Vince Vaughn among the cast. The production had a budget of about 12 million dollars and took roughly 23 million dollars at the worldwide box office.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.5 from some 74,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 7.4 from around 788 votes. Critical reception was positive, with a critics' rating of 7.1 from 49 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the scenes where Rudy is playing on the field, the players' jerseys are printed with the surnames of the actors and crew members.
- The film shows Rudy working after graduating from high school, but in reality, he served 4 years in the US Navy, which is not mentioned in the film.
- In reality, Dan Divyne (1924-2002) felt warmly towards Rudy and tried to help him. He even volunteered to play the villain in this film just to get the green light for the film's production.
- The scenes of football matches are shown very realistically because director David Anspach did not film with cameras directly on the field. Like in actual football broadcasts, all such scenes were filmed with cameras located outside the playing surface.
- Dan Divyne was very dismayed by the scene in which several players placed their jerseys on his table in protest of his decision not to let Rudy play in the game. According to Divyne, this never happened in real life, and if it had, those football players would have been immediately kicked off the team.
