Short description
A mechanic named Vahid believes he has encountered a man who tortured him during his time in an Iranian prison. After the man is involved in a vehicle accident and stops at his workshop, Vahid recognizes him by the sound of a leg prosthesis. This leads to a kidnapping as Vahid seeks revenge, though he soon begins to question if he has identified the correct person. To find the truth, he reaches out to other former prisoners, leading to a clash of perspectives regarding their shared past and the nature of retribution.
Written and directed by Jafar Panahi, this crime drama is the fourth film in his chronological body of work, following No Bears. The movie stars Vahid Mobasseri, Mariam Afshari, and Ebrahim Azizi. Produced by companies from Iran, Luxembourg, and France, the film had a budget of 6 million USD and earned 10 million USD at the worldwide box office. What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot secretly, as no official filming permit was obtained. Furthermore, the actresses in the film were filmed mostly without a hijab, the wearing of which is mandatory in Iran. Towards the end of the filming period, police officers did appear and even threatened the film crew with serious trouble, but everything worked out and the filmmakers were able to complete their work on the film.
- The idea for the film originated with Jafar Panahi while he was imprisoned between July 2022 and February 2023, a period that ended with a hunger strike (although he had been sentenced to six years). After his release, Panahi spoke repeatedly with other former prisoners, who convinced him to make this film.
