Outside Providence

Outside Providence is a coming-of-age comedy set in a working-class Rhode Island town, where teenager Tim Dunphy drifts through his days smoking marijuana and running with his friend Drugs Delaney. After he and his friends crash into a parked police car, his father, a blue-collar man at the end of his patience, sends him to a private boarding school in Connecticut. Out of place among wealthier classmates, Tim finds a reason to stay when he falls for a fellow student named Jane.

The film is directed by Michael Corrente, best known for Federal Hill and American Buffalo, and he wrote the screenplay with brothers Bobby and Peter Farrelly, who also produced. The Farrellys' brand of broad comedy shapes the material, though the story leans on drama and romance as well. The cast includes Shawn Hatosy as Tim, Amy Smart as Jane, Alec Baldwin as Old Man Dunphy, Jon Abrahams as Drugs Delaney, Richard Jenkins as Barney and George Wendt as Joey. A soundtrack of 1970s hits sets the period.
