Forgotten Island
Short description
Jo and Raissa are lifelong best friends who discover a mysterious portal during their final night together after high school. The portal transports them to the fantasy island of Nakali, a place filled with mythological creatures from their Filipino family stories. While some inhabitants become allies, including a clumsy werewolf named Raww, the pair must face a dangerous creature called the Manananggal. The conflict intensifies when they learn that returning home requires sacrificing all memories of their friendship, forcing them to find a way to escape before they forget each other completely.
This animated adventure and comedy was produced by DreamWorks Animation and co-directed by Januel Mercado and Joel Crawford. For Crawford, this follows his work on Trolls Holiday, The Croods: A New Age, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The voice cast features H.E.R. as Jo and Liza Soberano as Raissa, with additional voices provided by Dave Franco, Lea Salonga, Jenny Slate, and Manny Jacinto.
Released on September 10, 2026, with a runtime of 109 minutes, the film has received generally positive responses from viewers. It holds a rating of 6.8/10 on IMDb based on 154 votes and a higher score of 7.6/10 on TMDB from 12 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to one of the directors and screenwriters, Hanuel Mercado, the film was made in memory of his father (who passed away from pancreatic cancer), who also contributed to the writing of the screenplay.
- The film's visuals emulate the style of Studio Ghibli, where a touch of romanticism was intentionally infused into the natural landscapes. The creators used wide-angle lenses in deeply emotional scenes to emphasize the importance of moments of intimacy between the characters.
- It was originally intended that one of the main characters would be voiced by Dante Basco, but he was unable to participate in the project's voice acting, and the role went to Dave Franco, who specifically imitated Basco's voice.
