Summer School

Summer School follows Freddy Shoop, a high-school gym teacher whose vacation plans fall apart when he is assigned to teach a summer English class for students repeating the course. His relaxed approach clashes with a group of unmotivated misfits, at least until field trips and other unorthodox methods start to reach them. A teacher in a neighbouring classroom, Robin Bishop, becomes part of his summer as well.

Carl Reiner directed the film, which sits between Summer Rental (1985) and Sibling Rivalry (1990) in a run of comedies that also includes All of Me and The Man with Two Brains. Jeff Franklin wrote the screenplay and produced with George Shapiro and Howard West. Mark Harmon plays Freddy, with Kirstie Alley as Robin, Robin Thomas as the vice-principal, and Patrick Labyorteaux, Courtney Thorne-Smith and Dean Cameron among the students; 57 cast members are credited.

Released by Paramount on July 22, 1987, the film runs 97 minutes and took in about 36 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from around 24,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4/10 from 286 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3/10 from 35 reviews is lower than both audience scores.
