Short description

Marshal Matt Morgan's wife is raped and murdered, and the killers leave behind a saddle that Morgan recognizes as belonging to his old friend Craig Belden, now a wealthy cattle rancher in the town of Gun Hill. Morgan learns that Belden's son Rick took part in the crime. He travels to Gun Hill to arrest the young man, but Belden refuses to hand his son over, and the two men are bound by an old debt: Belden once saved Morgan's life. With the town siding against him, Morgan has until the departure of the last train to carry out his task, and finds help from an unexpected quarter.

John Sturges directed this Western, the sixth of the eighteen films he made, coming between The Law and Jake Wade and Never So Few. Kirk Douglas, who also produced through Bryna Productions, plays Morgan opposite Anthony Quinn as Belden, with Earl Holliman as Rick, Carolyn Jones as Linda, Brad Dexter as Beero and Brian G. Hutton as Lee Smithers. James Poe wrote the screenplay, and Hal B. Wallis and Paul Nathan produced.

Released in July 1959 and running 98 minutes, the film took in about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from roughly 9,700 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 from about 230 votes, while a smaller pool of critics rated it 7.4 from 11 reviews, placing critical and audience assessments close together.
