Ben Stride, a former sheriff, is hunting the seven men who killed his wife during a robbery at a Wells Fargo office in Arizona. Along the way he encounters John and Annie Greer, a couple whose wagon has broken down as they travel toward California, and he agrees to escort them. Two drifters, Bill Masters and Clete, join the party, each with his own interest in the twenty thousand dollars in gold taken in the robbery.
The Western was directed by Budd Boetticher from a screenplay by Burt Kennedy, and produced by John Wayne's Batjac Productions with Warner Bros. It runs 78 minutes and was released in July 1956, the first of the Boetticher-directed Westerns in the chronological list of his films that continues with The Tall T, Decision at Sundown, Ride Lonesome and Comanche Station. Randolph Scott plays Ben Stride, with Gail Russell as Annie Greer, Walter Reed as John Greer, Lee Marvin as Bill Masters and Don Barry as Clete.
The film holds a 6.8 rating on TMDB from 129 votes, while a small group of critics' reviews gives it 9.1 out of 10, a notably higher figure than the audience score.
