Hawaii is a historical drama set in the 1820s. Abner Hale, a stern New England missionary, marries Jerusha Bromley and takes her with him to the Hawaiian islands, where he intends to convert the local population. Jerusha forms friendships with the islanders, while her husband clings to his puritanical convictions. The distance between the two cultures proves too great to bridge, and understanding gives way to tragedy.
George Roy Hill directed the film, the first in the chronological list of his features that also includes Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and Slaughterhouse-Five. Dalton Trumbo and Daniel Taradash wrote the screenplay, and Walter Mirisch produced. Julie Andrews plays Jerusha, Max von Sydow plays Abner Hale, and Richard Harris, Gene Hackman, Carroll O'Connor and Jocelyne LaGarde appear alongside them. Thirty cast members and fifty-two crew members are credited.
The production cost 15 million dollars and returned 35 million dollars worldwide, a sum well above its budget. On IMDb the film holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 4,100 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 56 votes. A critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from nine reviews places it below both audience scores. At 189 minutes, it is among the longer films in Hill's filmography.
