Havoc

Allison Lang is a teenager from a wealthy Pacific Palisades family who, along with her friend Emily, adopts the language, clothes and posturing of street gang culture. Their group of affluent friends treats this as a way to rebel against their comfortable suburban lives, but a trip into the rougher parts of East Los Angeles brings them into contact with an actual gang, and the pretense of danger gives way to consequences they cannot control.

Barbara Kopple directed the film, her first narrative feature after a career in documentaries that includes Harlan County U.S.A. (1976), American Dream (1990) and The Hamptons (2002). Stephen Gaghan wrote the screenplay. Anne Hathaway plays Allison, with Bijou Phillips as Emily, Shiri Appleby as Amanda, Michael Biehn as Allison's father Stuart, Matt O'Leary as Eric and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Sam. Thirty actors are credited.

Made for about 9 million dollars, the film was released in 2005 and runs 86 minutes. Its ratings are modest and consistent across sources: on IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from roughly 22,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 out of 10 from several hundred votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from eleven reviews places it close to those audience figures, indicating a mixed response from both quarters rather than a sharp divide between them.
