Short description

Mickey's Christmas Carol is a 25-minute animated family film from Walt Disney Pictures, released in October 1983. It retells Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol with Disney characters in the leading roles. Ebenezer Scrooge, here rendered as Scrooge McDuck, is a wealthy miser with no interest in the holiday except as another working day. His cheerful, underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit, played by Mickey Mouse, bears the brunt of his employer's coldness. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his late business partner, Jacob Marley, and then by three spirits who show him scenes from his past, his present and what lies ahead. Donald Duck appears as Scrooge's nephew Fred, while Goofy takes the role of Marley's ghost.

The film was directed by Burny Mattinson, who also produced and co-wrote the screenplay with Alan Young and Don Griffith. It was Mattinson's first directing credit, followed by The Great Mouse Detective in 1986 and Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse in 2001. Alan Young voices Scrooge McDuck, with Wayne Allwine as Mickey, Clarence Nash as Donald, Hal Smith as Goofy and Will Ryan in several spirit and minor parts.

Made for about 3 million dollars, the short earned roughly 21 million worldwide, a strong return for its scale. Audiences rate it highly, with an 8 out of 10 on IMDb across more than 14,500 votes and a 7.7 out of 10 on TMDB.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The cartoon is based on Charles Dickens' novella "A Christmas Carol" (1841).
  • It was not initially planned for Alan Young (1919-2016) to voice Scrooge. It is claimed that no one at Walt Disney Pictures believed he would agree to it. However, Young himself asked to be auditioned for the role of Scrooge. The audition was successful, and from then on, Young voiced Scrooge for the rest of his life.
