Stacy works behind the scenes on a daytime talk show hosted by Kippie Kann. When her boyfriend Derek leaves his electronic organizer behind, she gives in to curiosity and finds the contact details of the women he dated before her. Encouraged by her co-worker Barb, Stacy approaches these ex-girlfriends under the pretext of booking them for the show, hoping their accounts will explain why Derek's past relationships ended. Her findings leave her more confused than before, and matters grow more complicated when she becomes friendly with one of the women, Joyce, without telling her the truth about her own connection to Derek.
Little Black Book was released in 2004 and directed by Nick Hurran, following his 2002 film Undertaking Betty. Melissa Carter and Elisa Bell wrote the screenplay, and the cast includes Brittany Murphy as Stacy, Holly Hunter as Barb, Kathy Bates as Kippie Kann, Ron Livingston as Derek, Julianne Nicholson as Joyce and Stephen Tobolowsky as Carl.
The production had a budget of 35 million US dollars and took about 22 million worldwide, a shortfall against its cost. On IMDb it holds a film critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 111 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 5.4 out of 10 from 373 votes, so critics and viewers alike registered muted reactions.
