Short description
After the Twelve Colonies of humanity are destroyed in a surprise attack, the survivors gather aboard the battlestar Galactica, one of the few vessels to escape. Commanded by Adama, the ship leads a makeshift fleet of civilian transports carrying the last remaining humans through space. Their goal is a legendary world known as Earth, home to a thirteenth colony whose existence is uncertain. The Cylons, robotic beings who turned against their creators after being denied civil rights, pursue the fugitives and intend to finish what they started. The fleet is also threatened from within by Baltar, a human scientist who collaborated with the enemy.
This theatrical film adapts material from the television series that aired on ABC from 1978 to 1980, combining its first and fifth episodes into a single feature. It is the second film directed by Richard A. Colla, after Fuzz in 1972, and the first credited to Alan J. Levi. Glen A. Larson wrote the screenplay, and John Dykstra produced. Richard Hatch plays Captain Apollo, Dirk Benedict appears as Lieutenant Starbuck, Lorne Greene is Commander Adama, and Herbert Jefferson Jr., Maren Jensen and Laurette Spang are among the twenty-six credited cast members. Made for about 3 million dollars, the film holds a 6.8 rating on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and a 6.9 on TMDB from roughly 217 votes. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics rate it 4.7 out of 10 from 23 reviews, well below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- By agreement with George Lucas, it was decided not to show laser beams on the screen when using blasters. The audience only saw a flash and immediately – the result of the shot. The laser action or light trail was only noticeable when the action took place directly in outer space.
- Muffit was played by a chimpanzee (which was noticeable in its movements). The animal was owned by Ralph Helfer, an animal behaviorist and author of several books about animals.
- Mickey S. Michaels, who was responsible for set decoration, contacted “Tektronix, Inc.” and they, in exchange for a mention in the credits, donated computer equipment worth $3 million and monitors worth around $35,000 at the time to the project’s creators for use in the Galactica bridge set and other sets.
- Terry Carter was initially cast as Lieutenant Boomer, but the actor broke his leg, and producer Glen A. Larson gave him another role – a colonel (which did not involve the same physical demands as the role of Boomer). Throughout the film, Carter's colonel is shown with a broken leg in a cast.
- After the sudden attack by the Cylons on Commander Adama's home planet, an image of his wife, Ila, is shown on screen. Sophia Loren served as the model for the image.
- The original model of the spaceship, restored and put on display at "Universal Studios" several years after the completion of filming of "Battlestar Galactica" (1978), was stolen and never seen again.
- In 1979, it was shown in cinemas equipped with the "Sensurround" system. This system added expanded range bass sound effects, and thus, low-frequency sounds were more felt than heard by viewers. The same system was used for the screening of four other films by "Universal Pictures": "Earthquake" (1974, Mark Robson), "Midway" (1976, Jack Smight), "Roller Coaster" (1977, James Goldstone), and the television film "Battlestar Galactica: The Cylons Strike" (1979, Vince Edwards, Christian I. Nyby II).
