In 1893 London, H. G. Wells presents his new time machine to a gathering of friends, only for police to arrive in pursuit of Jack the Ripper, who has just claimed another victim. The killer escapes by activating the machine and flees into the future. Wells follows him, expecting to find the peaceful utopia he has long imagined, but instead arrives in San Francisco in 1979, where the Ripper disappears into a modern city that offers him new hunting ground. Determined to bring him to justice, Wells must adapt to a world he never anticipated.
Nicholas Meyer directed and wrote the screenplay, with Herb Jaffe producing, and the film marks his first feature as director. Malcolm McDowell plays Wells, David Warner plays the Ripper, and Mary Steenburgen plays Amy Robbins. The credited cast numbers 26.
Released in September 1979, the film took about 13 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7 out of 10 rating from around 22,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from roughly 400 votes. Meyer went on to direct Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982, The Day After in 1983, Volunteers in 1985, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991.
