Barbie tells her sister Kelly the story of Rapunzel, a young woman with long, radiant hair who serves the jealous witch Gothel. Gothel keeps her hidden deep in an enchanted forest, behind a wall of magic glass and under the watch of a huge dragon named Hugo. Rapunzel paints to comfort herself, and when she discovers a magic paintbrush she escapes and sets out on a journey that draws her into a long-standing feud between two kingdoms. Along the way she is helped by Penelope, a gentle dragon, and meets a prince named Stefan.
The film is a Canadian animated family feature, released in 2002 with a runtime of 84 minutes. Owen Hurley directed it, working from a screenplay by Elana Lesser and Cliff Ruby, and it followed his Casper's Haunted Christmas and Barbie in the Nutcracker, coming before Barbie of Swan Lake and, later, Barbie in the Pink Shoes. Kelly Sheridan voices both Barbie and Rapunzel, with Anjelica Huston as Gothel, Cree Summer as Penelope, Mark Hildreth as Stefan, and David Kaye as Hugo and the General.
Audiences have received it favourably for a direct-to-video title of its era: it holds a 6.6 rating on IMDb from roughly 9,900 votes, and a 7 out of 10 on TMDB from around 1,300 votes.
