Barbie as The Princess & the Pauper

Based on a story by Mark Twain, this animated musical follows two girls, Princess Anneliese and a poor girl named Erika, who look remarkably alike. When Anneliese is kidnapped by an ambitious minister, Erika assumes the princess's identity to help rescue her. While posing as royalty, Erika encounters King Dominick, who believes she is Anneliese and falls in love with her. The plot focuses on the bond of friendship between the two doubles as they work to thwart the villain's plans.

Directed by William Lau, this was the first of 15 films he directed, followed by Barbie: Fairytopia in 2005. The screenplay was written by Elana Lesser and Cliff Ruby, with production handled by Mattel, Mainframe Entertainment, and Lionsgate Home Entertainment in Canada and the United States. Kelly Sheridan provides the voices for both Anneliese and Erika, with singing voices provided by Melissa Lyons and Julie Stevens. The cast also includes Mark Hildreth and Mark Luna as King Dominick, and Alessandro Juliani as Julian, among a credited cast of 20.
