Charlotte's Web is an animated family film about a pig named Wilbur who learns that he is being raised to be slaughtered. A farmer's daughter saves him as a runt and raises him by hand, but he is eventually sold to another farm, where the other animals tell him what his fate will be. A spider living in his pen, Charlotte, promises to help him, and the two become friends.
The film is based on E. B. White's children's novel, illustrated by Garth Williams, which has sold tens of millions of copies and been translated into many languages. It was directed by Charles A. Nichols, whose directing credits include In Dutch (1946) and Bone Bandit (1948) before this film, and A Flintstone Christmas (1977) and Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School (1988) after it. Iwao Takamoto is also credited as director, and Earl Hamner, Jr. wrote the screenplay. Joseph Barbera and William Hanna produced. The voice cast includes Debbie Reynolds as Charlotte, Henry Gibson as Wilbur, Paul Lynde as Templeton, Rex Allen as the narrator, Martha Scott as Mrs. Arable and Dave Madden as the Ram.
Released in March 1973, the film runs 94 minutes and was produced by Paramount with Hanna-Barbera Productions and Sagittarius Productions. It took about 5 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from roughly 24,000 votes, and on TMDB it has a 6.9 from about 431 votes, while critics gave it 6.7 from 21 reviews, so audiences and critics are close in their assessments.
