Born Free

Born Free tells the story of George and Joy Adamson, a British game warden and his wife living in a Kenyan national park. When George is forced to kill a lioness in self-defence, the couple take in her three orphaned cubs. Two of them are eventually sent to a zoo in the Netherlands, but the smallest, Elsa, stays with them and becomes a beloved part of their household. As she grows, local authorities grow concerned about the danger a full-grown lion poses, and the Adamsons face a difficult choice: train Elsa to survive on her own in the wild, or send her away to captivity.

The film was directed by Tom McGowan and James Hill, from a screenplay by Lester Cole, and is based on Joy Adamson's bestselling book about the couple's experiences. Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers play Joy and George Adamson, with Geoffrey Keen as Kendall and supporting turns from Peter Lukoye, Omar Chambati and Bill Godden. Shot on location in the African savannah, it runs 95 minutes and was released in March 1966.
