Short description
The Angry Birds Movie takes place on an island inhabited almost entirely by cheerful, flightless birds. Among them, Red, a bird with a serious anger problem, never quite fits in, and neither do the fast-moving Chuck or the volatile Bomb. When mysterious green pigs arrive and receive a warm welcome from the trusting islanders, the three outsiders suspect that their visitors have ulterior motives and set out to uncover what the pigs are really planning.
Based on the popular game series, the film was directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis, and written by Jon Vitti and Joel Cohen. It is the first feature in the directing chronology shared by the two directors, ahead of The Christmas Chronicles and several Snoopy specials. Jason Sudeikis voices Red, with Josh Gad as Chuck and Danny McBride as Bomb; Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader and Peter Dinklage are also among the voice cast, which credits 49 performers in all.
Made by Columbia Pictures with Finland's Rovio Entertainment and Rovio Animation on a budget of 73 million dollars, the film went on to earn about 350 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from 116,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.3, from 4,133 votes. A film critics' score of 5 out of 10 across 160 reviews places it close to, though slightly below, the audience ratings.
What's left behind the scenes
- Unlike their prototypes in the game, the characters in the film have a kind of hands.
- While voicing Leonard, Bill Hader parodied the voice of his high school football coach.
- In the Dutch version of the film, Chuck is dubbed by Enzo Knol, the first vlogger in the Netherlands to reach one million subscribers on YouTube.
- For the Spanish version, Red is dubbed by Santiago Segura, Chuck by José Mota, Matilda by Cristina Castaño, and Leonardo by director Álex de la Iglesia.
- A character named Terence does not utter a single word throughout the film. He only grunts, hums to himself, and sings arias from operas.
- The pigs have their own version of Daft Punk – the band Daft Pig can be seen at the controls at the disco on Bird Island.
- In the game, the eagle flies in when the user throws a huge golden egg. In the film, he flies in when all the eggs are stolen. They are all connected to each other, so it looks like one big egg.
- Stella, the Pink Bird, is the only one who doesn't use her special abilities when attacking Piggy Island.
- Since its release on December 11, 2009, the "Angry Birds" game by Finnish company Rovio has been downloaded over 3 billion times in all its versions and on all platforms.
- At the time of its release, the film was the most expensive in the history of Finnish cinema. The previous record – $9.7 million – belonged to the action movie "Big Game" (Jalmari Helander, 2014).
- At the beginning of the film, Red asks two birds how many stars out of three they would give to a holiday pie. Three stars is the maximum level a user can achieve in "Angry Birds" games.
- Like the members of the comedy duo "Smosh," who gained notoriety on the internet, Toby Turner (actor, comedian, musician, vlogger) voiced one of the film's characters (Perry), but this character was cut from the theatrical release.
- Starting June 10, 2016, the film begins with the short film "Early Bird Gets the Worm." Previously, the film began with the Sony/Columbia Pictures logo, followed by the Rovio Animation logo, and then the film's prologue.
- During the opening credits, Red's state of mind and life troubles are described by the background composition "Paranoid" (1970) by the British rock group Black Sabbath. The chorus ("Can you help me occupy my mind?") is not used in the film. Red is actually seeking help from other birds.
- In one scene, during the destruction of Piggy City, Bomb says to Matilda: "Maid of honor!" Bomb was voiced by Danny McBride in the film ("bride" in English means "bride").
- The license plate of the car stolen by Terence reads "Wild as a boar."
- The tickets for the pig concert on Bird Island read "Steve Aoki." This is a reference to DJ, composer, and music producer Steve Aoki.
