A young orphan named Sophie is taken from her bed one night by a giant and carried off to the land where giants live. She soon learns that her captor is not like the others: he is the Big Friendly Giant, who spends his nights collecting and delivering good dreams to sleeping children, while the larger giants around him eat people. Together, Sophie and the BFG set out to put a stop to them.
The film is an animated adaptation of Roald Dahl's story, released on Christmas Day 1990 as a television movie. It runs 87 minutes and was produced by Cosgrove Hall Films. Brian Cosgrove directed and produced alongside Mark Hall. David Jason voices the BFG, with Amanda Root as Sophie, Angela Thorne as Queen Elizabeth II, and Don Henderson providing several of the man-eating giants. It falls within Cosgrove Hall's run of Dahl and children's adaptations rather than at its outset.
On IMDb the film holds a 6.7 rating from roughly 7,900 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.4 from a much smaller base of about 176 votes. The wider sample on IMDb indicates a reasonably well-regarded family title carried by viewers who grew up with it, and the gap between the two figures reflects how much smaller the TMDB vote count is.
