Short description
The Nightmare Before Christmas is set in Halloween Town, a subterranean world of monsters, ghosts and ghouls whose whole year revolves around preparing for one night of frights. Jack Skellington, the town's celebrated leader, has grown weary of the same routine. When he stumbles into Christmas Town, a bright and joyful place unlike anything he knows, he becomes determined to bring that holiday home and run it himself. His idea of Christmas involves kidnapping Santa Claus and handing out macabre gifts, a plan that alarms Sally, a rag doll who cares for Jack and sees the harm he is about to cause.
The film was directed by Henry Selick from a screenplay by Tim Burton and Caroline Thompson, with Burton also producing. It was Selick's first feature, followed by James and the Giant Peach, Monkeybone, Coraline and Wendell & Wild. Danny Elfman provides Jack's singing voice and wrote the songs, while Chris Sarandon speaks the role; Catherine O'Hara voices Sally, with William Hickey, Glenn Shadix and Paul Reubens among the cast. Made for about 18 million dollars, it took roughly 50 million worldwide, a solid return that helped establish the stop-motion musical as a durable favourite.
On IMDb it holds 7.9 from around 410,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.8 from more than 10,000. A critics' rating of 8.5 from 107 reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores, indicating strong professional esteem alongside enduring popular affection.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the German version of the cartoon, the part of Sally is re-sung by the famous punk diva Nina Hagen.
- In the original voicing (and also when translated into other languages), the character of Crypt speaks and sings with a female voice. And only in the Russian version was his gender changed: Andrei Makarevich provided his voice.
- In one of the cut scenes, it can be learned that Dr. Finkelstein in a Boogeyman costume was originally planned as the main villain, but in the final version they decided to make the Boogeyman a separate character.
- Russian nesting dolls can be seen in one episode.
- The trees-doors depicted: Saint Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, Easter, Independence Day, Christmas, and, properly speaking, Halloween.
- Tim Burton was originally intended to direct the animated film. However, due to his commitment to “Batman Returns,” Henry Selick was appointed to the position.
- Jack first appeared in Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice” (1988). He spins on a carousel that is arranged on Beetlejuice’s extravagant hat.
- Two toys – an evil duck on wheels and a wild cat – “arrived” from Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns” (1992).
