Ghost World

Ghost World follows two teenage friends, Enid and Rebecca, who have just finished high school and are unsure what to do next. While their classmates head off to college, the pair drift through their small town, mocking the people around them and putting off any decision about work or study. Their plans to move in together stall, and Enid finds herself repeating an art class. Out of boredom, the two take an interest in a personal ad placed by Seymour, a shy, middle-aged record collector, and Enid eventually strikes up a friendship with him. Rebecca disapproves, and the bond between the two young women begins to come apart.

The film was directed by Terry Zwigoff, who wrote the screenplay with Daniel Clowes, adapting Clowes's graphic novel. It was Zwigoff's first fiction feature, followed by Bad Santa in 2003 and Art School Confidential in 2006. Thora Birch plays Enid, Scarlett Johansson plays Rebecca, and Steve Buscemi plays Seymour, with supporting turns from Brad Renfro, Illeana Douglas and Bob Balaban. John Malkovich was among the producers.

Ghost World was released in 2001 and runs 111 minutes. Made for about 7 million dollars, it took in roughly 9 million worldwide, a modest return for a film of its scale. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from around 132,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.1 from far fewer voters. A critics' rating of 8.3 from 166 reviews places it noticeably higher than either audience score.
