The Spanish Apartment

Cédric Klapisch wrote and directed this 2002 comedy-drama about Xavier, a French economics student who leaves Paris and his girlfriend Martine for a year of study in Barcelona. He plans to learn Spanish, settle into a rented flat and keep his head down, but the apartment he finds is shared with a group of young people from across Europe, each from a different country. Life among his new flatmates pulls him away from his original intentions and towards a different kind of education.

The film stars Romain Duris as Xavier, with Audrey Tautou as Martine, Judith Godrèche as Anne-Sophie, Kelly Reilly as Wendy, Cécile de France as Isabelle and Cristina Brondo as Soledad, among a credited cast of 21. It sits between Klapisch's Good Old Daze from 1995 and Russian Dolls from 2005, which continues Xavier's story, and it was produced by Bruno Levy.
