Thornton Melon is a wealthy, self-made businessman who owns a clothing chain specializing in plus sizes. When he discovers that his son Jason has been exaggerating his successes at college, Thornton decides to enroll at the same school and keep an eye on him. Father and son end up navigating campus life side by side, with Thornton's brash style clashing with academic expectations and Jason hoping to be seen on his own terms.

The comedy was directed by Alan Metter, released in 1986 as the second of the four features he directed, following Girls Just Want to Have Fun the previous year. Rodney Dangerfield leads as Thornton, with Sally Kellerman, Burt Young, Keith Gordon, Robert Downey Jr. and William Zabka among the cast. Harold Ramis, Steven Kampmann and William Porter wrote the screenplay, and Chuck Russell produced.

Made for about 11 million dollars, the film earned roughly 91 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 6.9/10 from 39 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating stands at 6.3/10 from 518 votes.
