Valentine is a part-time model in Geneva who is waiting to hear from her boyfriend abroad. After her car strikes a dog belonging to a retired judge, she tends to the animal and tries to return it to its owner. The judge, a cynical and withdrawn man, initially shows no interest in the dog, and Valentine keeps it. A later visit to his home reveals his habit of listening in on his neighbours' telephone conversations. Both disturbed and drawn in by what she finds, she begins to visit him regularly, and a wary connection forms between the two.
The film is directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski, who wrote the screenplay with Krzysztof Piesiewicz. It is the twelfth of the thirteen films he directed in chronological order, following Three Colors: Blue and preceding Three Colors: White. Irène Jacob plays Valentine and Jean-Louis Trintignant plays the judge; Frédérique Feder, Jean-Pierre Lorit, Samuel Le Bihan and Marion Stalens appear in supporting roles. The production was handled by Marin Karmitz and involved a credited crew of 48 across Polish, French and Swiss companies.
Released in 1994 and running 100 minutes, the drama blends mystery and romance. It earned 4 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 8.1/10 from 117,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.9/10 from 1,599 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 9/10 from 62 reviews, a stronger critical than audience result.
