Short description

Jessica Stein is a copy editor in New York whose romantic life has stalled. After a string of bad blind dates, and with her brother's wedding and her friends' settled lives making her feel more alone, she answers a newspaper personal ad. The ad was placed by Helen Cooper, an art gallerist looking for something different. What begins as a tentative meeting between two women develops into a relationship that surprises Jessica and pushes her to reconsider what she wants.

The film is a comedy directed by Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, written by Heather Juergensen and Jennifer Westfeldt, who also star as Helen and Jessica. It was the first of two features Herman-Wurmfeld directed, followed by Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. The cast includes Scott Cohen, Jackie Hoffman, Tovah Feldshuh and Michael Mastro, among 31 credited performers.

Made for about 1 million dollars, it earned roughly 10 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 18,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6 out of 10 from about 258 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 121 reviews places it above both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • For the taxi scene in which Heather Jurgensen's and Jennifer Westfeld's characters discuss lipstick, the filmmakers hailed a cab and paid the driver $20 to step away for a while. The director took the wheel, the cinematographer sat in the front seat, and the sound engineer climbed into the trunk.
  • The role of Judy Stein was written specifically for Tova Feldshuh.
