84 Charing Cross Road

84 Charing Cross Road is a drama set in New York and London, beginning in 1949. Helene Hanff, an American writer with a taste for old and hard-to-find books, comes across an advertisement placed by a small London bookshop, Marks & Co. She writes to the shop, and Frank Doel, the bookseller who handles her requests, answers. What starts as a straightforward order for secondhand volumes turns into a correspondence that lasts for years, carried on across the Atlantic through letters about books, work and daily life. The two correspondents grow close without ever meeting, and Helene eventually travels to London.

Anne Bancroft plays Helene Hanff and Anthony Hopkins plays Frank P. Doel, with Judi Dench as Nora Doel, Jean De Baer as Maxine Stuart, Maurice Denham as George Martin and Eleanor David as Cecily Farr. David Hugh Jones directed from a screenplay by James Roose-Evans and Hugh Whitemore, with Geoffrey Helman producing. The film was Jones's first feature, followed chronologically by Jacknife, The Trial and A Christmas Carol.
