A television film set largely in 1999, Doctor Who centres on the Doctor, a time-travelling alien from the planet Gallifrey. He is transporting the remains of his old enemy, the Master, home when an accident sends his craft, the TARDIS, to San Francisco. The Master's consciousness survives and takes over a human body, while the Doctor regenerates into a new incarnation. With a cardiologist, Grace Holloway, and a young man named Chang Lee drawn into events, the Doctor works to stop the Master, who intends to seize his remaining regenerations, his ship and the Earth itself.
Paul McGann plays the newly regenerated Doctor, with Sylvester McCoy as his predecessor, Daphne Ashbrook as Grace Holloway, Eric Roberts as Bruce and the Master, Yee Jee Tso as Chang Lee and Will Sasso as Pete. Geoffrey Sax directed from a screenplay by Matthew Jacobs, produced by Peter V. Ware for Universal Television and BBC Worldwide.
The film was the first of four features Sax directed, preceding White Noise, Stormbreaker and Frankie & Alice. Made for around 5 million US dollars, it took roughly 42 million worldwide, a strong return relative to its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from about 11,000 votes; on TMDB it holds 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 254 votes, so the two audiences broadly agree.
