Two Chicago police detectives, Ray Hughes and Danny Costanzo, work in ways their department would rather not examine too closely. After a drug case nearly gets them killed, their superiors send them off to Key West to cool down. The break does more harm than good: the two decide to leave the force and open a bar in Florida. Back in Chicago, their old target is free again and has not forgotten them.
Peter Hyams directed the film, the sixth of the seventeen features he has made in chronological order, following 2010 and preceding The Presidio. Gary DeVore and Jimmy Huston wrote the screenplay, and David Foster and Lawrence Turman produced it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with Turman-Foster Company and David Foster Productions. Gregory Hines plays Ray, Billy Crystal plays Danny, and Steven Bauer, Darlanne Fluegel, Joe Pantoliano and Dan Hedaya appear alongside them. The credited cast numbers fifty-five and the credited crew fifty-seven.
The film runs 107 minutes and was released on June 27, 1986, taking about 39 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from around 17,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1/10 from roughly 258 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5/10 from 24 reviews puts it below the audience scores on both sites.
