The Spectacular Now
Short description
The Spectacular Now centres on Sutter Keely, a high school senior who lives for the moment, enjoys parties and works in a menswear shop without giving much thought to life after graduation. After a heavy night of drinking, he wakes up on a stranger's lawn and meets Aimee Finecky, a shy classmate who reads science fiction and has never had a boyfriend. The two are very different, yet they gradually grow close, and their relationship forces Sutter to confront his drinking and his lack of direction.
The film was directed by James Ponsoldt, following Smashed in 2012 and preceding The End of the Tour, The Circle and Summering. It is based on Tim Tharp's novel, with a screenplay by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, and stars Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley, alongside Masam Holden, Kaitlyn Dever, Brie Larson and Kyle Chandler. Thirty cast members and fifty-three crew members are credited.
Made for about 3 million dollars, the film took roughly 7 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 168,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 out of 10 from about 3,080 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 out of 10 from 170 reviews places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Representatives of actress Jennifer Jason Leigh doubted whether it was worth signing her on for filming a movie with such a small budget. The film's producers had to resort to trickery. Leigh's representatives were told that Julianne Moore was vying for the role, and if Leigh refused, Moore would be happy to play Sarah.
- Saoirse Ronan was initially cast for the role of Amy.
- Thomas McDonnell was initially cast as the lead role.
- The scene where Sutter's father asks him to pay the bar bill was supposed to end with Tommy leaving. Its continuation (Sutter reaches for his wallet, then asks Amy if she has any money, and they both try to gather the necessary amount) was improvised by Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley, but the director liked it and included the extended scene in the film.
