Short description

Oculus centers on two siblings, Kaylie and Tim Russell, whose parents died violently when they were children. Tim was held responsible for the killings and spent years in a psychiatric facility, while Kaylie grew up convinced that an antique mirror in the family home was the real cause of the tragedy. Now in their early twenties, Tim is released and wants to move on, but Kaylie persuades him to return to the house and help her gather evidence against the mirror. She has traced the object's history and found that its owners suffered similar violent fates across the centuries. As they set up cameras and document their stay, both begin to lose their grip on what is real.

The film was directed by Mike Flanagan, who wrote the screenplay with Jeff Howard, following his debut feature Absentia and preceding Hush, Before I Wake and Ouija: Origin of Evil. Karen Gillan plays Kaylie and Brenton Thwaites plays Tim, with Katee Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane as their parents and Annalise Basso and Garrett Ryan as the younger siblings. Made for about 5 million dollars and released in April 2014, it earned roughly 44 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from around 149,000 votes, on TMDB 6.5/10 from over 3,200 votes, and a critics' rating of 6.6/10 from 156 reviews, indicating comparable reception from critics and audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The mirror from the film is hanging in the psychologist's office in Mike Flanagan's "Absence".
