What We Do in the Shadows
Short description
What We Do in the Shadows follows a group of vampires sharing a house in Wellington, New Zealand. Viago, Deacon and Vladislav try to keep up with ordinary life: paying rent, dividing household chores and getting into nightclubs, all while avoiding sunlight and finding ways to feed on human blood. Their older companion Petyr lives in the basement. When Petyr turns a young man named Nick into a vampire, the others take on the job of teaching him the rules of his new existence. Nick, in turn, introduces them to aspects of contemporary technology and society. The arrival of his human friend Stu unsettles the household further. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement directed and wrote the film, and both appear in it, with Waititi as Viago and Clement as Vladislav. Jonny Brugh plays Deacon, Cori Gonzalez-Macuer plays Nick, Stu Rutherford plays Stu and Ben Fransham plays Petyr. The film came second in Waititi's directing career, after Boy in 2010 and before Hunt for the Wilderpeople in 2016. Made for about 2 million USD, it took roughly 7 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from around 213,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 out of 10 from about 4,000 votes. A critics' rating stands at 7.9 out of 10 from 190 reviews, above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Over 120 hours of footage was shot, most of which was improvisation by the actors playing the main roles.
- The bars and nightclubs visited by the vampires are real establishments located in Wellington's entertainment district (New Zealand).
- Taika Waititi based the image of his character on his own mother. And Jemaine Clement drew inspiration for his role from Gary Oldman's portrayal in the film Dracula.

- The hill where the confrontation between vampires and werewolves takes place is the same hill that Frodo and the other hobbits ran across in the film "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001) while fleeing the Black Riders. They also hid in the roots of a tree on this hill.
