Donovan's Reef

John Ford directed this 1963 adventure comedy set on a Pacific island, where three former Navy men have settled after the Second World War. Michael "Guns" Donovan runs a tavern, Thomas "Boats" Gilhooley is his sparring partner in a long-running rivalry, and Dr. William Dedham has built a life and a family there. Their routine is disturbed by the arrival of Amelia Dedham, a proper young woman from Boston who has come looking for the father she never met. Fearing how she will judge his household, Dedham conceals the truth about his children, and Amelia's growing attachment to Donovan complicates matters further.

The film belongs to the later stretch of Ford's career, arriving as the twenty-ninth of the thirty-one features he directed, between Flashing Spikes and Cheyenne Autumn. Ford produced from a screenplay by Frank S. Nugent and James Edward Grant, and reunited with John Wayne, who plays Donovan, alongside Elizabeth Allen as Amelia, Lee Marvin as Gilhooley, Cesar Romero, Mike Mazurki and Jack Warden. Twenty-six performers receive credit.

Made for about three million dollars, it returned roughly seven million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 from around eleven thousand votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from a far smaller sample; a critics' score of 6.4 from fifteen reviews places it close to how general audiences have received it.
