Angel's Egg

In a dark, ruined world that appears to hold no other people, a young girl carries a large egg wherever she goes and collects vessels and water in jars. A man arrives in this desolate place, carrying a cross-shaped object, and the two gradually stay together despite their wariness of each other. The film is told largely through its imagery and orchestral score rather than dialogue.

Mamoru Oshii directed and wrote the film, the third of thirteen he has directed, following Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer and preceding Patlabor: The Movie. Yoshitaka Amano provided the storyboards and character designs. The voice cast includes Mako Hyodo as the girl, Jinpachi Nezu as the man and Keiichi Noda as the narrator. Studio Deen and Tokuma Shoten produced the 71-minute film, released in Japan in December 1985.
