Short description

In a distant future, the Earth has been devastated by war and ecological collapse. Much of the planet is covered by a toxic forest inhabited by giant insects, leaving humanity to survive in small, isolated settlements. The peaceful Valley of the Wind is one of the few remaining safe havens, but its stability is threatened by aggressive neighboring powers fighting over limited resources. Princess Nausicaä, who possesses the unique ability to communicate with animals and insects, seeks to understand the secrets of the poisonous jungle to establish a peaceful coexistence between nature and humans.

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, this adventure fantasy was the second of 16 films he directed, following The Castle of Cagliostro and preceding Castle in the Sky. The screenplay was written by Miyazaki and Kazunori Ito, with Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki serving as producers. The voice cast features Sumi Shimamoto as Nausicaä, alongside Ichiro Nagai, Gorō Naya, Youji Matsuda, Yoshiko Sakakibara, and Iemasa Kayumi.

Produced by Tokuma Shoten, Topcraft, and Hakuhodo, the film had a budget of 1 million USD and earned 9 million USD at the worldwide box office. It is well-received by both audiences and professionals, holding a rating of 7.9 on TMDB based on 4,208 votes and a higher score of 8.3 from film critics.

What's left behind the scenes

  • At the time the film was being made, the manga had only just begun, and Miyazaki did not yet know when and how it would end. Therefore, an ending was invented specifically for the film, which the director later dismissed with great disdain.
  • This is Topcraft studio's first and only work on the Japanese market. Before the film, the studio was a subcontractor for the American company Rankin-Bass, and afterward, it became the foundation of Studio Ghibli, created by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.
  • It was working on this film that brought Joe Hisaishi fame, at a time when he was a little-known minimalist composer. Hayao Miyazaki invited him after listening to Hisaishi's first album, which was released in a small print run.
  • Hayao Miyazaki took the name Nausicaä from the princess in Homer's "Odyssey." He borrowed the main character's fascination with insects from the ancient Japanese "Legend of the Noble Maiden Who Loved Insects."
  • Miyazaki often features characters with similar appearances in different films. He reuses Nausicaä's appearance a few years later in the character of Fio in "Porco Rosso" (1992).
