John Munn keeps to himself with his two sons in a remote part of rural Georgia, raising Chris and Tim away from other people. Chris works alongside his father and has a talent for trouble, while younger Tim is a sickly boy given to strange habits and dreams of elsewhere. Their isolated routine is broken by the arrival of John's brother Deel, released from prison sooner than expected. Tension between the two men escalates into a tragedy, leaving the boys to fend for themselves and flee across the Mississippi Delta with Deel in pursuit.
The film is a drama-thriller directed by David Gordon Green, his first feature among the fourteen he has made to date. He wrote the screenplay with Joe Conway, and the producers include Edward R. Pressman, Terrence Malick and Lisa Muskat. Jamie Bell plays Chris, Josh Lucas is Deel, Dermot Mulroney is John, Devon Alan is Tim, and Kristen Stewart and Robert Longstreet also appear among the thirty credited cast members.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.5 from around 9,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from roughly 141 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 117 reviews places it broadly in line with those audience scores, suggesting a modest but consistent reception.
