Short description

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead continues the story of Mike and his friend Reggie, who are still pursued by the Tall Man, the sinister figure behind the Morningside mortuary. Now an adult, Mike remains the focus of the Tall Man's attention, while Reggie fights to keep him out of the Tall Man's reach. Their search takes them through devastated towns and into encounters with both new allies and enemies, as the Tall Man's influence spreads through reanimated corpses and other creatures. The film mixes action, horror and science fiction elements as the two men try to survive and strike back.

Don Coscarelli directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced it with Seth Blair. It is the fourth of the seven features he has directed, following Phantasm II in 1988 and preceding Phantasm IV: Oblivion in 1998. A. Michael Baldwin returns as Mike, Reggie Bannister as Reggie, and Bill Thornbury as Jody, with Gloria Lynne Henry, Kevin Connors and Cindy Ambuehl also in the cast.

Made for about three million dollars, the film was released in 1994 and runs 91 minutes. It has a rating of 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from 297 votes, while a smaller group of critics gave it 4.8 out of 10 from nine reviews, so both measures sit in similar territory.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming for the third part began in late 1992, but the movie was not released until 1994.
  • At the end of the film, a slightly modified standard disclaimer can be seen, which includes the words: "Any resemblance to actual events or people, living or dead, is purely coincidental." In addition to legal proceedings, copyright infringers also fall under the "wrath of the Tall Man."
  • Universal Pictures declined to participate in the production of the third film following the mediocre box office performance of the second part and no longer restricted the director's choice of actors. Don Coscarelli cast Alec Baldwin as Michael Pearson, who, 15 years later, was able to return to the character he played in the first film.
