Short description
After years of war, the Federation and the Klingon empire find themselves on the brink of a peace summit when a Klingon ship is nearly destroyed by an apparent attack from the Enterprise. Both worlds brace for what may be their deadliest encounter.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's producer, Harve Bennett, played the role of a Starfleet commander.
  • This film was the first to name Sulu – Hikaru – and Kirk’s middle name – Tiberius.
  • Gene Roddenberry died 48 hours after watching the film.
  • The eyepatch covering General Cheng's eye is made of a piece of leather and three metal fasteners securing it to his head. Each of them is engraved with a Klingon crest.
  • During filming, "Frankie and Johnny" starring Al Pacino was being shot in the neighboring soundstage. According to the script, in one scene, Al Pacino was supposed to portray extreme surprise after opening a door. To enhance the authenticity of the acting in this episode, film director Garry Marshall arranged for Al Pacino to see... Kirk and Spock when he opened the door. The actor’s surprise was genuine.
  • In 1990, Harve Bennett began preparations to film a new movie with the working title "Starfleet Academy." His idea was that this film should be a prequel to all previous films and the entire "Star Trek" series (1966-1969), telling the audience about the years of Captain Kirk's education. A script was prepared and set construction had begun. But suddenly, Paramount Pictures decided to halt work on the prequel and begin filming a sequel, as most fans of the saga were waiting for a continuation.
