Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Short description
Alice Hyatt is a housewife in a small New Mexico town, married to a delivery driver and raising an eleven-year-old son, Tommy. When her husband dies in a traffic accident, she sells the family's few belongings and sets out with Tommy for California, hoping to restart her life as a singer. Money runs short, and the two settle instead in Arizona, where Alice finds work as a waitress in a diner. There she meets David, a divorced rancher, while Tommy's difficult temperament and her strained relations with a fellow waitress complicate the new life she is trying to build. Ellen Burstyn plays Alice, with Alfred Lutter as Tommy, Kris Kristofferson as David, Harvey Keitel as Ben Eberhardt, Diane Ladd as Flo and Lelia Goldoni as Bea.
Martin Scorsese directed the film, the fifth of 38 features listed for him and the one that followed Mean Streets and preceded Taxi Driver. Robert Getchell wrote the screenplay, and David Susskind and Audrey Maas produced for Warner Bros. Pictures and David Susskind Productions. On a budget of about 2 million dollars, it took roughly 21 million dollars worldwide. On TMDB it holds 7 out of 10 from 556 votes, and its critics' rating stands at 7.5 out of 10 from 84 reviews, a narrower gap between professional and audience opinion than is common.
What's left behind the scenes
- Barbra Streisand was offered the lead role. She declined, as she felt she was too young for the part of Alice, and also did not want to play a failed singer for fear of damaging her musical career.
- The opening scene references Victor Fleming's "The Wizard of Oz" (1939).
- The film was shot in a real restaurant located in Phoenix, Arizona. This restaurant was initially called "Mel's Diner," then "Pat's Diner," and later reverted to its original name.
- One of Laura Dern's earliest film appearances, as the daughter of Diane Ladd. She is a little blonde girl in glasses in the final restaurant scene.
- Alice promises Tommy to send him to Monterey, California for his birthday. Later, they pass by a large supermarket sign that reads "Monterey Village."
- The film's relative success in theaters spawned the television series "Alice" in 1976, which ran for nearly ten years.
