WAX & GOLD is a documentary that uses a hotel in Addis Ababa, constructed by Emperor Haile Selassie, as a starting point to examine a location that feels both alien and familiar to the filmmaker. Through a combination of archival footage and interviews with local people, the film blends personal thoughts with the broader histories of Europe and Ethiopia. The narrative explores the complexities of historical truth and the European perspective, touching upon a lesser-known period of fascism.
The film was directed by Ruth Beckermann, following her 2024 work Favoriten. It is a co-production between Austria and Italy, produced by Ruth Beckermann Filmproduktion. The final cut has a runtime of 97 minutes.
