The Slipper and the Rose

Prince Edward of the small kingdom of Euphrania is expected to marry for the good of the realm, but he wants to marry for love. Cinderella lives under the same crown, reduced to a servant in her own home by her stepmother after her father's death. A palace ball brings them together with help from her fairy godmother, and when she flees at midnight she leaves behind a single glass slipper. The prince sets out to find the woman it belongs to.

Bryan Forbes directed and co-wrote this musical fantasy with the songwriting brothers Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman. It was Forbes's fifth film as director, following The L-Shaped Room, King Rat, Deadfall and The Stepford Wives, and Stuart Lyons produced it for Paradine Co-Productions. Richard Chamberlain plays Prince Edward and Gemma Craven plays Cinderella, with Annette Crosbie, Edith Evans, Christopher Gable and Michael Hordern among a credited cast of 86 that includes numerous dancers and courtiers.

The production had a budget of about 5 million dollars, a substantial figure for a British musical of its period, and runs 146 minutes. Audiences rate it modestly but consistently: on IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 3,600 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.9 from a much smaller base of 57 votes.
