Dororo

A samurai makes a pact with forty-eight demons, trading away the body parts of his newborn son in exchange for power over the land. The child survives, is found and raised by a physician who fits him with prosthetics, and grows into a young warrior who sets out to destroy the demons and win back what was taken from him. A girl named Dororo, a thief with her own reasons for seeking revenge, travels at his side.

Akihiko Shiota directed this Japanese adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's manga, working from a screenplay he wrote with Masaru Nakamura. It was the first of two features Shiota directed and the earlier of the two, preceding Wet Woman in the Wind by nine years. Satoshi Tsumabuki plays Hyakkimaru and Ko Shibasaki plays Dororo, with Kiichi Nakai as Kagemitsu Daigo, Yoshio Harada as the healer Jukai, Eita Nagayama as Tahomaru and Mieko Harada as Yuri. Takashi Hirano produced, and the film was made with a budget of about 19 million dollars.

Released in March 2007, the film runs 139 minutes and mixes action and fantasy with horror and science fiction elements. Its worldwide gross of roughly 27 million dollars stands above its production budget. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 3,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 from about 149 votes.
