Tromeo & Juliet

Tromeo & Juliet is a punk retelling of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, set in the underground scene of 1990s Manhattan. The Capulet and Que families have feuded for years, ever since the Capulet patriarch swindled the head of the Que household, and their clashes erupt whenever they cross paths. At a costume party, Tromeo Que and Juliet Capulet meet and fall for each other without realizing which families they belong to. Once they learn the truth, they find themselves caught between a forbidden love and a feud that matters more to their relatives than the feelings of two young people. The film keeps the broad shape of the play while adding piercings, cybersex, drugs, weapons and plenty of violence, along with a large supporting cast of oddball relatives.

Lloyd Kaufman directed, and the screenplay is credited to Kaufman and James Gunn. It came out in 1996, after Kaufman's earlier Toxic Avenger films and Class of Nuke 'Em High, and before Citizen Toxie and Poultrygeist. Jane Jensen plays Juliet and Will Keenan plays Tromeo, with Valentine Miele, William Beckwith, Steve Gibbons and Sean Gunn among the main cast.

Made by Troma Entertainment, the film runs 107 minutes and mixes action, comedy, drama, fantasy, horror, mystery and romance. It has a 6/10 rating on IMDb from around 7,400 votes and a matching 6/10 on TMDB from 166 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.3/10 from 317 reviews.
